I would personally say the
I would personally say the Mark4 astra (i own one) because it was the best in its class at the time even though some people argue that. it was good looking, spacious, economical, practical, fast and as always with any vauxhall, fantastic breaks!!! however, my opinion might change when i drive the mk6 when ever it's available for test drive.

At the event, I tried a 1.6 SE and a 2.0 CDTi 160 auto in Elite spec with optional 18" wheels.
The 1.6 engine was sweet and smooth but not enough grunt and at 100 MPH on the high speed bowl, the engine was revving at 4250 - too high. The ride quality was good
The 2.0 diesel sounded a bit uncultured compared to the French HDi engines, but was very impressive in its power delivery. The ride quality was too jiggly with the 18" wheels.
So, my ideal Astra would be the 1.4 Turbo with standard wheels - more grunt than the 1.6, but smoother than the diesel, with over 40 MPG easily achievable.
