What do you look for in a car’s design, and what would you modify about the Astra's?

In the video blogs posted on this site by Mark Adams – Vice-President of GM Europe Design – he describes how the new Vauxhall Astra “offers a wide range of interior environments, from upscale sophisticated through to sporty and dynamic,” framed by an exterior in which “sculptural artistry meets technical precision.” What do you look for in a car’s design, and what would you modify about the Astra’s?

Whatever the size or body

Whatever the size or body style, a car's look has to be composed. See the Ssangyong Rodius for an example of how not to look composed. It surprises me how mass market cars often look so botched - can design really be that hard? Thumbs up for the Astra apart from the chunk of chrome on the front grille - a bit too glam for me - would be better with a brushed effect.

Although I liked the overall

Although I liked the overall design of the Mk6 Astra - I did not like the short, but thick, second windscreen pillar on which the door mirrors are mounted.

I found when Test Driving the car at Millbrook, the short second windscreen pillar and slightly higher door mirror, caused a blind spot when coming up to a road junction and you turn your head 45 degrees to the right your view is obscured by the Main and Second pillars - plus the higher door mirror.

I own a 1999 Mk4 Astra Sport and I don't have a problem with that.
