All New Vauxhall Astra Review

Let’s not beat about the bush – the last Astra was a good car, but the compact class includes some very good cars. To my eye, and most others, the new Insignia seemed to set out Vauxhall’s stall for a new generation of cars to compete with the best in class, and perhaps to come out on top. Compare the Insignia to the Vectra and the step up is clear as day.

If you're as eager as we are to lay your eyes on the brand new Vauxhall Astra, then check out the chart below showing the display car's movements over the next few months to see when it'll be paraded through a town near you. Which venue will we be seeing you at?

This video shows the manufacturing process of the all new Astra at Ellesmere Port. It's great to see the car being driven on a British road at the end of the video especially as this Astra has been specially developed for UK driving conditions.

Stephen Mertes - Group Project Manager Interview

Here are our three Frankfurt bloggers interviewing Stephen Mertes Group Product Manager of Vauxhall. I'm biased but I have to say they are all pretty insightful and you can learn a lot about the design process behind the sixth generation Astra. What would you have asked?

I must admit, I didn’t really know what to expect when we arrived in Frankfurt to be greeted by the sixth generation of Astra. Many pre production cars can look oh-so-good in scoop photos but a touch stale in real life and vice versa. As we entered the affectionately entitled ‘fairground’ (a wonderful German name for an exhibition fair centre) straight to the Vauxhall stand it was immediately apparent that preview photos had done a good job but only in the flesh did the new design really look its best, the translation from what had been achieved with the Insignia into a smaller hatch was a striking shape that couldn’t help but entice passers by for a closer look.

As we all know, your typical motor show is as full of bikini-clad models as it is of supercars, so to celebrate this sweet truth we’ve rounded up some pictures of Frankfurt’s buffest and we’d like you to vote for whichever one you’d most like to get in the back seat of your Astra.

Crashgate - Singapore Grand Prix '08

It seems that karma has finally caught up with Flavio Briatore. With Monday’s emergence of ‘witness X’ in the Renault Formula 1 case (who was reportedly “personally present at a meeting shortly after qualifying when Mr Symonds mentioned the possibility of a crash plan to Mr Briotore”), the ex-crew boss has been indefinitely banned from F1 while his partner in crime - ex-engineering chief Pat Symonds – has been banned for five years.

Return of the Trab - yea or nay?

Posted in: Frankfurt Motorshow

East German carmaker Trabant stopped building their quirky little smokeboxes soon after the Berlin Wall fell, but toymaker Herpa now owns the brand and wants to bring it back to life... this time with all-electric propulsion.

They presented their concept, the Trabant nT, at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Frankfurt Motorshow - Darren

I’m back now from what was a flying, but very enjoyable, visit to the Frankfurt Motor Show and I have to say I returned to the UK feeling pretty upbeat about the motor industry as a whole.
